Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel crossed the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation took place on the third circuit when marshals were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his broken nose section
Racer's Instant Response
Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a active circuit track officials can be permitted to just dash across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is currently investigating the events
"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was advised that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" commented the regulatory authority
"During the third lap, marshals were alerted and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch marshals were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was displayed in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred after that point"
